Royal SkillsUSA Advance 27 members to the State Competition

The Royal SkillsUSA competed Friday, February 9 and Saturday 10, at the District 9 SkillsUSA Competition at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas. Royal came away with many medals and best of show trophies!  In all, a total of 27 Royal High School Career and Technical Education students have qualified for the State Competition in Corpus Christi, April 5-8.

The Royal Welding Department had members advance to the state level over the weekend. In the Welding Competition, Selena Castillo received first place making this a special trip for this young lady to be eligible for the state contest. The Welding Department also competed in the Welding I Competition, Ruben Fernandez received first place gold medal, Herminio Olvera second place silver medal, and third place bronze medal was Joanna Oviedo.

The Royal Machining Department also had a great weekend at District Competition advancing six members to the state competition. In the Precision Machining Contest, Alex Galvan received first place and Ariel Perez placed second. Precision machinist, Alex will be eligible for the state competition.  The Precision Machine Job Exhibits, consisted of aluminum helicopter, received “Best of Show.” The precision machine job exhibit team consisted of Noe Nino and Jerry Arriaga, this team of two will qualifying to state with their precise milled/manual machine-made helicopter. Also machinists that received “Superior” rating was Victor Castillo who exhibited a model Empire State Building, Alex Galvan who exhibited a model manual lathe machine, Jordi Rodriguez who exhibited a tug boat, and Joel Quintero was exhibited a dragster race car.

The Cosmotology Department represented Royal High School Career and Technology very well advancing eleven cosmetology students to the state level. In the Cosmetology Esthicis Competition Bianca Ibarra was a first place gold medal winner. Also, Cosmetology Projects that received “Superior” rating advancing to the state competition are as follows: Viviana Rios - Day and Evening, Lesly Gonzalez - Day and Evening, Andrea Rodriguez - Day and Evening, Laimy Garza - Color and Cut, Yajaira Salazar - Day and Evening, Maria Huerta - Color and Cut, Alondra Urquiza - Color and Cut, Andrea Gomez - Day and Evening, Emily Saldana – Fantasy, Arlett Infante - Nail Art. Also receiving “excellent” rating was Janeth Sanchez - Day and Evening and receiving “good” rating was Monica Perez- Day and Evening, Nicole Guerra - Day and Evening, and Samantha Morales – Fantasy. The Cosmetology Department also received third place in the Cosmetology Quiz Bowl Competition.

The Arts, Audio Visual Department is successfully returning some of its members back the state level, after receiving first place in the Arts, Audio Visual Production Quiz Bowl Competition.  Team members Aldo Ramirez, Shuana Odum, Apryl Razo, Joshua Diaz, and Victor Martinez will be representing Royal Arts, A/V at the State competition.

The Automotive Department made a strong showing at the District Competition. The Automotive Department exhibited two rebuilt T-5 manual transmissions in the Automotive Job Exhibit, the tranny’s were rebuilt and exhibited by Dante Wade and Arianna Greathouse. Both tranny’s received a “Superior” rating at the District Competition and Arianna Greathouse’s tranny recieved “Best of Show” overall of the Automotive Job Exhibits.

The Royal SkillsUSA advisors would like to congratulate all these students on their respective accomplishments and a job well done representing Royal High School Career and Technical Education at the District 9 SkillsUSA Contest. Please wish them good luck as they prepare for the State Competitions in Corpus Christi, Texas, April 5-8.
